Definition
The operating system of a server provides an SAP instance with data for the following areas:
The operating system monitor collects this data using the collector SAPOSCOL and provides this data in the operating system monitor to allow you to monitor the server.
Use
The system displays the specified data when you call the operating system monitor.
If you choose the Detail Analysis menu in the operating system monitor, you can obtain additional detail data for the specified areas. The system displays the following data.
Structure
Detail Data from the Shared Memory
Snapshot current data | Current detail data from the shared memory Monitored Processes displays the workload due to selected processes (see Monitoring Selected Processes with SAPOSCOL). |
Previous 24 hours | Stored data for the last 24 hours |
Operating system log | Listing of a part of the operating system log |
Detail Data from the Performance Database
Display within server | Usage of a server within the last 30 days |
Display across servers | Usage comparison for the accessible servers for the last 30 days |
The background job SAP_COLLECTOR_FOR_PERFORMANCE regularly collects data from the SAPOSCOL shared memory and stores it in the performance database MONI. Only the most important data is stored in this database.
The system performs calculations on the basis of this data immediately. The daily average for the time of the highest usage is calculated from the hourly average values (10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 16:00).
Additional Functions
System configuration | Defined values for operating system kernel parameters are displayed together with the currently active values, as they appear in the configuration files. If the system was started with a different kernel parameter, these values differ from each other. |
Parameter changes | All changes to the system parameters are displayed here. |
LAN Check by Ping | A PING command over several servers provides the following information:
With a simple PING command, you receive the results for each sent data packet. |
The SAP program PING determines the time that a data packet requires for the network transfer from its own system to the target system. It is an extension of the UNIX standard command PING. This time is a good indicator of the network transfer capacity. It considers the physical network distance and the network technology in use.
The program also provides information about the number of presentation servers, application servers, and database servers in an SAP system. Select the desired server and execute the PING operation. You can perform PING operations with different data packet sizes.
