Derived and collective roles

Question: Hi friends,

Please let me know what is Derived and collective roles, i am just aware of Single and composite roles.

Regards,

Answer:
Derived Role - A Child relationship to a Parant role whiose umbilacle cord is not severed, so when the Parent gets a cold the child can suffer irreprable harm. Nice Idea to create similar roles, but I reccommend you cust the cord and let the child grow up.
Collective Roles - Composite roles. I do not recommend their use. Proper re-engineering and role design negates any need. They were create to cure the symptoms of poor role design rather than having the customer rework their roles correctly.

Answer:
I made very good experience with derived roles. The derived roles enable you to build
- a single template role for e.g. company code/plant/sales org. etc. *
- derive roles for company code 0001, 0002, 0003 from that role.
As a result if a new transaction needs to be added or removed or an error needs to be rapaired, you just have to touch the template role, click a button and all changes are automatically carried out in all derived roles.
(Example: Template Role: A/R Clerk - Derived Roles A/R Clerk 0001, A/R Clerk 0002, A/R Clerk 0003).

Derived roles make sense when you have more than one company code, plant, sales org. etc.. Of course they only make sense if the role structure accross your organisations is the same meaning that a role in company code 0001 should have the same access as the in company code 0002.
The same applies for roles of other modules where the org. level is plant, purch. org, purch. group, sales org. etc..

See also some ABAPs which start with PFCG* which are helpful to define specific fields as org. levels (e. g. cost center / CO-OM Responsibility Area).

hpsapbasis

Use the search functionality on this forum to look at the pro's and con's of using derived roles
MFS36 did a good job in describing the benefits of derived roles, but as guest stated there are also significant downsides to using this method too. Best to arm yourself with this knowledge before doing anything.

Personally I would go with guest.
