Mass update of profiles

Does anybody know of a way to update a large number (3000+) of profiles without having to edit each one manually? What I have at the moment is a specific authorisation field that contains '*' in all the profiles, and need to amend each one to contain one of two different values . The system release is 3.1I, and the profiles have been created both manually and using the profile generator. So far I have looked at a BDC session (not really feasible) and a direct table update using an Abap (last resort for obvious reasons).
