Creating or Changing a Backup Medium

Use

You create a new backup medium or change the data for a backup medium that already exists.

Prerequisites

You have the server authorization Backup.

Syntax

medium_put

The backup medium specified in is created or updated. The name of the medium may comprise a group name and a member name. These are separated by a slash.

::= [/]

Groups of parallel backup media of this type are used for parallel backups and restores. To create a group of parallel backup media, execute the command for creating one backup medium as many times as you need. Create the group by assigning each different to the same .

The name of the device/file with which it can be addressed through operating system functions.

When you change an existing backup medium with the LOG and the FILE, note that the system adds a serial number after the successful backup of the originally defined. You must enter this serial number here too.

Type of the backup medium. Possible values are:

AUTO | TAPE | FILE | PIPE

The media type AUTO is the default value for the command for activating the automatic log backup. There can only be one backup medium of this type. If there is already a backup medium of type AUTO, and you create a backup medium of type AUTO again, the system changes the media type of the existing backup medium to FILE.

Specify TAPE for backup to a non-rewindable tape, FILE for backup to a file, and PIPE for backup to a pipe.

In Microsoft Windows: The name of a backup medium of type PIPE must adhere to the following convention: \\.\pipe\. For a backup medium of type TAPE, the path must adhere to the following convention: \\.\tape. If you specify a relative path for a backup medium of type FILE, the backup medium is stored in the run directory of the database instance.

In UNIX, any path can be used for backup media of type FILE and PIPE. If you specify relative paths, the backup media are stored in the run directory of the database instance. You must specify absolute paths for backup media of type TAPE.

Type of save for which the backup medium is to be used:

DATA | PAGES | LOG

Specify DATA for a complete data backup, PAGES for an incremental data backup and LOG for a log backup.

Maximum number of pages that can be written to the backup medium. This entry is necessary to change the tape correctly, for example. If the backup media are of a sufficient size, you can enter a zero here.

Number of pages that are transferred when accessing the medium (default: 8).

This option is only relevant for the medium type FILE and defines the behavior if the file is already present. Possible values are:

YES | NO

If you specify YES and the file already exists, it will be overwritten with the new backup. If you specify NO and the file already exists, the backup will fail.

Details of whether the device changes the backup medium automatically

are only relevant in Microsoft Windows.
Possible values are:

YES | NO

Operating system command to be executed before backing up to a succeeding medium or restoring from a succeeding medium.

Backup tool to be used.

Possible values are:

NONE | BACK | NSR | TSM

If you specify the value NONE and PIPE, in UNIX the pipe must already have been created before the start of the backup, and in Microsoft Windows it cannot exist yet.

If you specify a value other than NONE, you must enter PIPE as the and 0 as the . The pipe cannot exist in either UNIX or Microsoft Windows before the backup starts.
