CCMS Alert Monitor in TMS

The CCMS Alert Monitor is integrated with the Transport Management System (TMS) to enable the system administrator to monitor the system. It is activated automatically when the TMS is configured.

For basic information about alert monitors, see the section on the Computing Center Management System under Alert Monitor.

The CCMS Alert Monitor offers the following functions:

  • Displays any error alerts occurring in the TMS or when exporting requests; it organizes the alerts by topic in a tree structure.
  • Analysis method for each alert
  • Option of setting alerts to completed
  • Alerts are visible as long as they have not been completed (completed alerts are visible in the history).

The CCMS Alert Monitor includes all systems in the current system landscape.

Any new systems that you include in the system landscape appear immediately in the monitor. Similarly, any systems you delete from the landscape disappear from the monitor straight away. Remember that if you do this, you may also delete open (uncompleted) alerts.

Note

The monitor registers any problems that occur locally in the system, either internal system problems, or problems that it has contacting other systems.

These alerts are sent to the TMS controller at the same time. When you are logged on to the controller you can view and process all alerts that have occurred in the domain.

Note

Remember that any errors that occur when the CCMS alerts are registered are sent to the TMS Alert Viewer. Do not forget to check the entries in the TMS Alert Viewer regularly.

Accessing the CCMS Alert Monitor

To access the CCMS Alert Monitor, go to the initial TMS screen and choose This graphic is explained in the accompanying text or Monitor ® TMS alerts ® CCMS Alert Monitor.

Alerts in the Transport Management System

Alerts

Various situations can lead to errors when you are working with the Change and Transport System (CTS). The system administrator must react to these errors to ensure the stability and consistency of the SAP System.

To support the administrator, the Transport Management System (TMS) records CTS errors and provides tools that can be used to display and process these situations, known as alerts.

Among others, the Transport Management System records the following alerts:

  • Errors that occurred when transport requests were exported
  • Errors that occurred when transport requests were imported
  • Errors in communication between SAP Systems
  • Errors in the CTS configuration

Note

You can display the alerts in both the CCMS Alert Monitor and the TMS Alert Viewer. On the initial TMS screen you can specify the default alert display by choosing Extras ® Settings ® Standard Alert Display.

Tools

CCMS Alert Monitor

The CCMS Alert Monitor is activated automatically when the TMS is configured. It replaces the TMS Alert Viewer, which is now only needed in special cases (for example, for special analyses). The CCMS monitor organizes alerts by system and topic. You can use this tool to display and process alerts.

Alerts are recorded in the system where they occur and then sent to the transport domain controller. This lets the system administrator monitor all systems in the transport domain centrally from the domain controller.

Note

You do not need to make any additional changes to the configuration of the Computing Center Management System (CCMS) (such as maintaining central system groups) to be able to monitor TMS alerts in multiple systems. The TMS communication interface is used to send alerts to the CCMS in the domain controller system.

TMS Alert Viewer

Unlike the CCMS Alert Monitor, the TMS Alert Viewer is organized chronologically, and displays all actions for the selected system, not just errors. However, the Alert Viewer does not let you process these actions.

The TMS Alert Viewer only retains a certain number of actions in the display. If you want to display older actions, choose Edit ® History +/- to include more entries.

Caution

It can take some time to include older actions in the TMS Alert Viewer.

SAP Transport Management System Concepts

SAP's Transport management system represents the centralized change and transport system CTS for all R/3 systems. SAP introduced transport management systems TMS from version 4.0 onwards. One of the main
benefits of the new transport management system is that it enables the SAP administrator to manage all SAP R/3 change requests from one single SAP client. Centralization of change request results in streamlined change management.

Earlier the transport of objects was done through transaction code SE06. With the introduction of transport management system, the movement of objects is now controlled through transaction code STMS. SAP TMS allows SAP administrators to define transport routes before hand. This minimizes human intervention in handling transport requests. As a segregation of duties best practice, access to transport management system transactions should only be restricted to the Basis team. Below, I have listed some of the important SAP transactions related to transport management.

Important Transport Management TCodes

SCC1, SCC4 - These are Client Administration transactions which enable user to create a new client SCC1 and copy data from an existing client to a target client.

SE10 - SE10 represents the transport organizer. It is used to manage and verify transport requests.

SE11 - SE11 is the ABAP
dictionary
and is used to manage and release transport requests.

STMS - The transaction for transport management system, controls the movement of objects between various SAP systems.
