Monitoring Program msprot

Use

You can use program msprot to monitor the message server at operating system level. The program connects to the message server and records all logons, logoffs, and status changes of the logged-on Web AS instances.

Integration

Program msprot can also be integrated in separate scripts for checking the message server. The program returns the following return values:

Message server could not be logged on. Either incorrect connection data has been specified or the message server is currently not running.

Request (to receive changes in the server list) to the message server has failed: either the message server has been terminated or there is a network problem.

The list could not be fetched from the message server. The message server has been terminated or there is a network problem.

Connection to the message server has been broken The message server has been terminated or there is a network problem.

You can fetch program msprot from the Service Marketplace. Although the program is available only as of 6.20, it can be used with message servers from earlier releases.

Features

When you enter parameter msprot, you get a list of possible options:

-a display all (ip/servno)

-t display time

-k send keepalive after n seconds

-n timeout in seconds for net calls (default blocking)

-r stop program after n seconds

-l list server and exit (ignore -k and -r option)

When you call msprot enter the necessary information to connect to the message server. You have the following options:

· Enter SID details (option name=); the necessary information (host name and service) are fetched from the profile files of the Web AS instance.

· Enter profile file details (option name=); the necessary information are also fetched from the profile files of the Web AS instance.

· Directly enter the name of host and service or the port number of the message server (option -mshost host -msserv service).

If you do not specify an additional option, program msprot connects to the message server and records all logons, logoffs, and status changes of the Web AS instances. There is an example further below.

The columns have the following meaning:

· Column INFO means the type of information to follow. LIST is the application servers that are displayed after msprot starts. ADD or SUB means that an application server has been added or taken away, while msprot was running. MOD means a session change of the application server, for example from STARTING to RUNNING.

· The other columns are the same as those in the Overview of the SAP Application Server (SM51): Instance Name, Host Name, Dispatcher Port, Status, and Services Provided.

Meaning of the Optional Parameters

Displays the current time

-l

The program terminates once the server list has been displayed.

-a

Additional display of the port number

-n

Maximum period of time for the network calls (default value is blocking)

-k

After the specified number of seconds has passed a message is sent to the message server. This means you can check whether the message server is still running. The default is that no such messages are sent to the message server.

-r

The program terminates after the specified number of seconds. The default is for the program to run until an error occurs. This is usually if the message server terminates.

TRACE=2

With this option you can increase the trace level (for analyzing problems). You can find more details in file dev_msprot.

Example

You enter msprot name= and receive the following output that continues to be displayed.

First the current list of application server instances are displayed; here this is two instances. Then the application server with the name ls0301_BIN_98 logs on to the message server and changes its internal status (that is, it sends its IP address to the message server and changes its status from STARTING to RUNNING). Finally, this application server terminates and logs off from the message server.

Monitoring Program msmon

Use

With program msmon you can monitor the message server at operating system level.

Integration

Program msmon offers the same functions at operating system level as the Message Server Monitor in the SAP System (transaction SMMS).

Prerequisites

You have access to the host on which the message server of your SAP System is running and you can log on there with user adm.

Features

The call of the message server monitor without arguments displays the permitted arguments and options:

[-customer] : enable customer mode

As a rule you use q to quit the message server monitor and m to get to the menu (next level up).

After you have called msmon with the system ID, the profile or the host/port of the message server, you will get a list of the application servers logged on to the message server (see the example in section Monitoring Program msprot).

If you then enter m and select Return, you will get to the main menu:

1 : display client list

Displays the list of logged on application servers – as on the initial screen.

2 : display hardware id

Displays the Hardware Keys of the host.

3 : security menu

Jumps to a security sub-menu. Each application server has a security name that it sends to the message server at the start. You can find out this name from the server name (1) or from the IP address and port number (2).

4 : statistics menu

Here you can activate, display, deactivate, or reset message server statistics. See also Message Server Monitor.

5 : server parameter

The most important profile parameters of the message server are displayed (see Message Server Parameters)

6 : server release information

Displays the release details of the message server, see Message Server Monitor.

7 : expert menue

Jumps to the expert menu, see Message Server Monitor.

8 : connect to server

Here you can directly establish or cancel the connection of msmon to the message server.

9 : disconnect from server

11 : display logon group list

Displays the configured logon groups, see Test Program lgtst.

12 : display logon group list with snc

Displays the configured logon groups with SNC, see Test Program lgtst.

13 : group logon data

Displays data of a logon group.

14 : group logon data with SNC

Displays data of a logon group with SNC.

15 : group logon data with LB

Displays data of a logon group: IP address, port, release, and whether RFC load balancing is activated for this group, see Test Program lgtst

16 : group logon data with LB and SNC

Same as for groups with SNC.

17 : free memory of logon data

The allocated memory for this logon group is released (expert function).

18 : force reread of logon data

The logon data is checked by the message server at regular intervals. With this you can force a new import.

19 : counter menu

Counter menu (expert function).

+ : increase trace

Increase trace level (see Message Server Monitor)

- : decrease trace

Decrease trace level (see Message Server Monitor)

If you are using the option –customer when you call msmon, a different menu will appear.

Caution

Note that the changes are lost when you call the program again. You have to make permanent changes in the profile file.

8 : dump network buffer

Writes the host name buffer to the trace file dev_ms (see Message Server Monitor, expert functions)
