Your /usr/sap//DVEBMGS00/work directory can sometimes be your best friend. If anything bad happens when you start your SAP instance, it will be recorded here, usually in the dev_rfcx, dev_ms, dev_wx, and stderrx files. Those x’s stand for numbers because several of them can be created at any given time. Anything with the word *old* in it is from the previous Sap startup and you can ignore those files.
If a SAP instance does not come up, go to the work directory, sort the files descending by date/timestamp with “ls -ltr” for descending or “ls –lt” for ascending, and start opening files to searching for problems. 99 times out of 100 you will find more information regarding the problem
